Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is the integrated city municipality lying along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Israel; it stretches for 15 km along the seashore and for 10 km inland. It is the second most populous city in Israel. Tel Aviv is surrounded with wide golden sandy beaches. Lovely boulevards of the city under shady trees, spacious green parks and the embankment possess a special charm.

Tel Aviv is less than a century old. The city was founded in 1909 by Jewish immigrants on the picturesque coast of the Mediterranean Sea as a new part of the ancient port of Jaffa built on the place of ruins of the ancient Jewish settlement of Tel-Kasila. The first written mentioning of Jaffe belongs to the Egyptian chronicles of the 15th century BC. It is believed that it was Jaffe where Noah built the ark and Perseus freed Andromeda. In 1910 the town began to be called in Hebrew Tel Aviv which means "the hill of spring" as the symbol of hope for revival of the Israeli state. Israel was proclaimed to be the state in 1948 and the UN recognizes Tel-Aviv-Jaffa as the capital of Israel.

Tel-Aviv-Jaffa is the most important administrative, economic, financial, shopping and cultural center of the country, a modern city. It houses enterprises and foreign embassies, trading companies and banks, editorial offices of newspapers and journals, publishing houses, the Ministry of Defense, the General Staff. The population of Tel-Aviv-Jaffa includes 404,4 thousand people (2010). National and religious composition: 96.1% — Jews, 3.0% — Muslim Arabs and 0.9% — Christian Arabs.

Culture. The cultural and economic capital of Israel long ago became one of the most favorite tourist destinations both for Israelis and foreigners. It is not surprising. Bright, multifaceted and always cheerful Tel Aviv strikes by its forever young, easy-going and relaxed spirit. By all means, a real international atmosphere, lots of entertainment, continuous circulation of life and blue and warm Mediterranean Sea attract thousands of visitors. Tel Aviv rempts tourists by its live markets, boutiques, refined cuisine, world-class night clubs, street art, the beauty of sunsets, bright contrasts. Ultramodern high-rises adjoin small narrow seaside streets typical for the Middle East, magnificent restaurants are side by side with cheap snackbars, large department stores with "flea markets", beaches and parks with business centers. Some districts of Tel Aviv can hardly be called beautiful. Architects of the German school "Bauhaus" built up some of its parts, houses were built 2-3rd-storey; streets were planned strictly perpendicular or parallel to the coast. UNESCO later declared them protected landmarks and included the Bauhaus district into the list of the World Heritage of Mankind.

Tel Aviv is the main center of Modern Hebrew culture, the center of theaters (Gabim, Gesher, Tsavta, Chamber Theater, etc.), orchestras (a great number of rock and jazz bands), art galleries, concert halls, numerous museums of the world rank. Impressive Tel-Aviv Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Israel Land, the Museum of the Jewish Diaspora, the Museum of design in Holona, the Museum of the Bible are only few examples from the long list. Near Tel Aviv there is also one of the most advanced parks of entertainment and the park of the Safari in Ramat Gan. Modern Tel Aviv with its secular habits, new buildings and hectic public life isn't similar to Jerusalem at all. Nowhere else in Israel can you experience such a light, relaxed atmosphere!

The old multi-cultural city of Jaffa today is one big tourist and art center with numerous cafes, restaurants, galleries, workshops, benches, "flea" markets, museums and zones of archeological excavations.

Beaches of Tel Aviv. As long as 14 km, 12 sandy beaches follow one after another, often ranked as some of the best beaches in the world. All beaches, apart from "Ha-Tsuk", are free; you must pay only for parking. Every beach has a rescue team, children's zones, plank beds, umbrellas, awnings (for an additional fee), cafes, bars. Many of them have exercise machines, platforms for beach sports.

Weather. Tel Aviv enjoys plenty of sunshine throughout the year. Summers here are hot and damp, winters are soft and rainy, by and large, the weather is fine, and the sun – is generous.

Treatment in Tel Aviv. To someone Tel Aviv is a bright resort; however, others seek treatment here. The Tel Aviv agglomeration is the recognized center of medical tourism. Medical institutions differ in specializations and the services provided. All directions which make Israeli medicine famous are presented here: surgery, oncology, gynecology, maintaining pregnancy and childbirth, cosmetology and plastic surgery, ophthalmology, etc. Appointments with world renowned leading experts are made half a year ahead.

Safety issues in Tel Aviv. Despite frightening information on terrorism, there are much fewer violent crimes in Israel in general and in Tel Aviv in particular than in Russia. One should not be afraid of thefts and robbery in any part of the city in the afternoon, it is only necessary to avoid walks in parks alone at night. Of course, a threat of terrorist attack exists; therefore, police do their job by checking documents, luggage carriers or bags. For sure you shouldn't be afraid of police officers in Tel Aviv: their work is to help people.
