City History. Rethymno has its own character, history, charm and originality! Archeological excavations allow assuming that pioneer settlements appeared in the territory of modern Rethymno during the Minoan Era (3-2 millennium BC). Later, during the Greek-Roman period, the city expanded and became an important shopping center. At the time of Venetian occupation it played a great role in the cultural life of the island. The 16th century is the period of the greatest magnificence of Rethymno when his glory as a center of science and art became known far away from the country. However, in the 17th century Turks intruded and turned all churches into mosques which determined development of the region for 200 years to come. In 1898 Crete gained autonomy, and in 1913 the island was attached to Greece. 10 years later Turks and Muslim Greeks were relocated, and Greeks from Asia Minor arrived here. The city quickly recovered after fascist occupation and now it is considered one of the best resorts of Crete. Small churches and quiet cobbled streets, majestic fortresses and spacious embankments, aroma of bright flowers and spicy olives – this place is one of the favorite locations for artists, photographers and film directors.
